Hi, I am Sharonte

Each step of this journey was a battle, but I was fortunate to have an incredible support system—my family, friends, and medical team at MD Anderson Cancer Center & Carti—who stood by me every step of the way. They provided not just the physical care I needed, but also the emotional strength to keep going.

I THANK GOD daily for HIS FAVOR & that He saw me WORTHY to become a breast cancer SURVIVOR.

Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

This is my story....

On November 16th, 2021, at the age of 38, I received a diagnosis that would change my life forever: Stage 2B Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. This type of breast cancer accounts for only about 10% of all cases and is known for its elusive nature—it often causes no symptoms and is rarely detected on mammograms.

My journey began with something many women might overlook: a monthly self-breast exam. During one of these exams, I noticed a thickening in my breast. Trusting my instincts, I immediately contacted my physician. Despite undergoing two mammograms, both returned with no significant findings. However, I knew something was not right, so I continued to advocate for my health.

My persistence led to an ultrasound, which finally identified a suspicious area. A biopsy confirmed my fears—Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. From that moment on, my life became a whirlwind of medical appointments, treatments, and surgeries. My treatment plan was intense, given this diagnosis under the age of 40. I underwent six months of chemotherapy, followed by a left mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection, a procedure that was as emotionally challenging as it was physically. To ensure any remaining cancer cells were eradicated, I underwent five weeks of daily radiation therapy.  After 6 months of healing, I was able to then undergo right mastectomy with laparoscopic oophorectomy (ovaries removed), followed by breast reconstructive surgery early 2023.

Though the path has been challenging, I’ve faced it with resilience and determination.

I reflect on the journey with a mixture of gratitude and determination. This experience has reinforced the importance of self-advocacy, especially when it comes to our health.

Sharing my journey is not just about recounting the challenges; it’s about highlighting the lessons learned. I hope that my story encourages others to be vigilant, to trust their instincts, and to never stop advocating for their own health. We are often our best and only advocates, and it’s a role we must embrace with courage and determination.
